Refugee Church: Report 2022 on internally displaced persons and refugees
On the occasion of the UN World Refugee Day on June 20, 2022, 'Open Doors' released a report on the persecution of Christians around the world.
‘The Open Doors’ is a non-profit organization that has been committed to informing about the persecution of Christians around the world and supporting projects to help Christians for more than 60 years. A Report on the situation of persecution of Christians around the world was published on June 15
Report 2022
According to the Report in 2022,more than 360 million Christians worldwide suffer a high level of persecution and discrimination for their faith.
In 76 countries the persecution of Christians is defined as “high.” In most of these countries, Christians are displaced and forced to leave their homeland. The displaced Christians lose the contacts, their social network, sense of identity, protection, thus increasing insecurity, psychological distress
Persecution is also discrimination. Not infrequently, violent extremist group use terror against Christians, creating in them sometimes irremediable trauma.
The report highlights how even conversions to Christianity generates rupture with the family of belonging, loneliness and abandonment.
There are 5,898 Christians killed, a 4 percent increase from 2021; 5,110 churches and buildings attacked or closed (a 14 percent increase). And the most disconcerting figure is the increase of kidnapped Christians: 3,829: a 124% increase over 2021 (where 1710 cases were recorded).
Dehonians and persecuted Christians
Most persecuted Christians live in the areas where there is a strong presence of violent religious extremism groups, or in countries where there is a majority Muslim presence. In order of danger, there are the 10 countries where persecution is highest: Afghanistan, North Korea, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Eritrea, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, and India.
Dehonians are not present in the regions most at risk of persecution, except in India. But we are all connected and in one family. Therefore it is important to stay informed, support projects, welcome displaced Christians, create opinion and a network of support for those who have lost everything because of faith.
