ROME, ITALY 1986
“In Jesus Christ, God definitively entered into the history of mankind”
The theme of the first WYD is about hope: “Always be prepared to witness to the hope that is in you”. In St Peter’s Square on March 23, 1986, Palm Sunday, John Paul II carries in his heart the eyes of young people from all over the world: “Dear young friends: Today you are here, in St. Peter, Rome, to begin the tradition of World Youth Day, to which the whole Church is invited to celebrate. I cordially welcome you and greet everyone who has come here not only from Rome and Italy, but also from other countries”. “Youth Day means precisely this: to go out to meet God, who entered human history through the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ. He entered her irreversibly. And he wants to meet you first, young people, and say to each one of you: Follow me, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”.
