Saint Margaret Mary AlacoqueOctober 16, SCJ Memorial
Margaret Mary (Verosvres, Autun, France, 1647), religious of the Visitation in Paray-le-Monial, was favoured by special graces and illuminations on the mystery of Christ’s love present in the Eucharist. An apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart, she promoted the institution of the special liturgical feast in His honour. She died on October 17th, 1690.
Fr. Dehon quotes these words of the saint to her novices: «“For us the voice of God is in our holy rules. Let them be good nourishment for your hearts. They will make you enter the interior life, the life hidden in God, where the cross is a food of perfection. Walk therefore on your way, which is that of exactitude in the observance of your religious duties, if you wish the Sacred Heart to recognize you as its daughters” […]. I repeat these words to my spiritual children, in spite of my unworthiness» (DSP 1936, 399-400).
